    Charity IS selfish (as you well know), but Harford is arguing that this somehow makes “selfish giving” less valuable than “selfless giving”. I think the idea that giving is only admirable if you take no joy from the transaction just doesn’t make any sense. Human beings are altruistic animals, the fact that we’re internally motivated to give back doesn’t mean that somehow giving is only worthwhile if we someone avoid taking joy from the act.
