If you review a hospital’s expenditures, you can see how many different vendors a hospital has and how much is spent with each company. Many times vendors are happy to make a contribution to an organization whether it be sponsoring a special event or placing their name on a plaque in your lobby.

While working in development or marketing for a hospital may seem like an easier job then at some organizations, many people simply don’t understand why a hospital could possibly need money with the amount of revenue they bring in. My argument to those individuals is this: many nonprofit hospitals operate on such a slim operating margin that they rely on philanthropy to invest in new technology, attracting high-quality physicians, making capital improvements and more. If I end up in a hospital, I want to be in one that has the best physicians with the most current technology.

I couldn’t agree more! Hospitals have so many natural partners that doing cause-related marketing is easy.

Hospitals have an audience of individuals and families that are grateful for services. If a person gets better, they are grateful for the care they receive. Even in circumstances where someone may pass away, if a family is grateful for the care that individual received they are a cause-related marketing tool for a hospital. Anything related to one’s health can be an emotional issue. Regardless of confidentiality related to healthcare, you can be sure that those being cared for in a hospital come from all backgrounds. The 40 year old lawyer who comes to your ER with a heart attack could be your organizations next major gift for a capital campaign.
