Newsletter: You Should Adopt This Creepy Phone Tactic from Wayfair 🌚 ; Sales of Mr. Rogers’ Iconic Sweater Support Namesake’s Charity 🚂 ; The Best Charity CEO on Twitter 😎
I've written before on how to turn your homepage into a lead-generating machine. You'll need an email pop-up and a service that pings you when a company visits your site (e.g. Leadfeeder, VisitorTrack, Leadberry).
The next step is to take a page from Wayfair's playbook. There was a report earlier this month that the online retailer was making unsolicited calls to customers while they were browsing the Wayfair website. Creepy, right?
I'm not suggesting you do the same thing. Wayfair's calls are spammy and unwanted. But calling a few select people after they visit your site and/or sign-up for email updates isn't such a bad idea.
For example, when someone signs up for email updates on your website they're sending you a message: "Hey, I'm interested in your work!" Some of these people will sign-up using their business email (e.g. jane.kimball@krogers.com). Daily or weekly, you should review these sign-ups and research the ones with business emails on LinkedIn.
But don't stop there.
Pick up the phone and leave them a message. "I saw that you signed up for email updates on our website," I would say. "Is there something specific you are looking for, or can I answer a question for you?" Don't sell. Just offer to be of service to them. See what happens!
You can do the same thing with companies that visit your site (again, you'll need to subscribe to a service that tracks these visits.) You can read how I used one of these services - Leadfeeder - to track down a potential lead here.
Finding good leads is hard enough. Don't ignore the ones in plain view!
BTW, have a wonderful Thanksgiving! 🦃I'm thankful to all of you for reading my newsletter every week! 🙏
✍️ Partnership Notes
1. Through a licensing agreement with the nonprofit Fred Rogers Productions, Inca Fashions is selling Mr. Rogers' iconic sweaters. Interested in licensing your own products? Here's a primer from supahstah Rachel Leber at Be Well Brands.
2. Smaht article from the team at For Momentum on how companies can engage their vendors in cause campaigns. Includes examples from Walgreens, Walmart and others.
3. Grimaldi's Pizzeria raised $192,000 for Share Our Strength in 2019 at its 43 restaurants. This brings their total donation since 2013 to $1 million! But SOS partner Vasari LLC, which operates about 70 Dairy Queens across Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico, has filed for bankruptcy and is closing 29 stores. I covered both Grimaldi's & DQ at the NRA Show back in 2016 and am rooting for both companies!
4. ROI Institute is conducting research on how organizations approach the issue of corporate philanthropy, employee volunteerism, employee giving and CSR. Take the survey and as a thank you you'll be the first to receive the results. [SPONSORED LINK]
🤑 Marketing Your Cause
1. Corporate philanthropy and marketing stunts are becoming more common. But who's really benefiting from stunts like Domino's Paving for Pizza? 🤔
2. Is the future of influencer marketing organic influencers? Megan Strand and I talked about influencers on this week's episode of CauseTalk Radio.
3. This UK charity’s CEO was named the best CEO on Twitter. Twitter is a powerful but vastly underused platform for nonprofit leaders. Earlier this year I made the case for why you should be on Twitter in 2019. It's not too late!

🧠🍌 Brain Food
1. Big news. TOMS footwear is ending its one-for-one giving program.
2. Chick-fil-A will stop donating to anti LGBTQ+ organizations...but is the Salvation Army really anti-LGBTQ+? The loss of funding to the charity will impact 11,000 kids.
3. The tragic data behind Black Friday deaths.😳Be careful out there, folks!
