The holiday gifts 🎁are coming three weeks early thanks to Karen Wu at Perlman & Perlman!

Karen just finished the second installment of her four-part series on the four key legal issues you - my readers! - requested guidance on in the Selfish Giving / Accelerist Partnership Law Survey you completed earlier this year.

This week, Karen is answering your questions on registration and reporting requirements. She has separated the questions into two groups: Company questions and Charity questions.

The Charity questions Karen answers include:

  1. Our charity was asked to be the beneficiary of a company’s charitable sales promotion, but we’ve never engaged in a cause marketing campaign before. What do we need to be aware of before we proceed with this opportunity?

  2. Our nonprofit is already registered nationally, and discloses all of its CCV partners as part of our annual charitable solicitation registration renewals, so we should be all set with our CCV-related compliance, right?

  3. Our charity was approached by a start-up company that wants to conduct a cause marketing campaign to benefit our organization. When we told them they may need to register with certain states and get bonds, they were concerned about the cost and burdens of compliance. We don’t want to lose the opportunity to build a partnership with this company. What can we do?

1. The owner of Dante’s Italian Cuisine in New Jersey bought $25,000 worth of wooden stars from Stars of Hope, a community arts program, so his customers could decorate them while they wait for their meals. Some hang their creations on the tree near the door. The interactive experience gives the restaurant staff the opportunity to explain what Stars of Hope is! Now that's win-win.

2. 25+ companies that gave back on GivingTuesday.

3. Donate profits days are quickly becoming one of my favorite business fundraisers. They are transparent, efficient, lucrative and highly visible! Take this one by Barro's Pizza for St. Mary's Food Bank. Yesterday, Barro's donated all the profits from its 43 Arizona restaurants. According to St. Mary's, the goal this year is to raise $300,000 - almost $50,000 more than was raised last year.

4. In more Arizona news, here are the 25 most philanthropic companies in the state. Note the $40,000 fundraiser for the Arizona Housing Coalition. Impressive considering that the Angry Crab Shack currently has just seven locations!

5. Do you use Gmail to email prospects? Get notified when they open your emails with this free mail tracker from Hunter.io. Couple this tactic with the phone call tactic I shared last week.

🤑 Marketing Your Cause

1. Some great examples here on how brands are using text and social messaging apps for content marketing. Pair it with this article on how Greenpeace is driving regular donations with Facebook Messenger.

2. More nonprofits should be monitoring what their competitors are doing. This article explains how to do it!

3. What if your supporters reacted to your work as this colorblind boy did when he saw color for the first time. If your supporters aren't blown away by what they're seeing, you're either not doing the right work or not telling the story of that work in the right way (BTW, it's almost always the latter). Your work should be the lens that makes people say "WOW!" 😢

2. Another reason to love Mister RogersHe wanted to take down consumerism

3. A baker that uses cakes to tell the story of climate change. Enlightening and delicious! 🍰😋
