Newsletter: Search Begins for Top 30 Biz Fundraising Programs🔭; Lawyer Pleads Guilty to Sweet Crime🍫; "Alexa, Donate to My Favorite Cause" 🗣
Are you watching the AMC series The Terror? It's about the 1847 British expedition to find the Northwest Passage. There are two ships, the HMS Erebus and Terror. The show is pretty good, and reminds me of a quest that the HMS Selfish Giving and Catalist are embarking on to uncover the top 30 corporate fundraising programs in the U.S. as ranked by revenue.
Like searching for a passage through the arctic ice for an easier route to Asia, no one has ever accomplished what we're trying to do. This will be the first time someone has ever compiled such a list so we really don't know what we'll find. And while we don't expect to find a monster like the crew does in The Terror, we're bracing ourselves for a few surprises!
The crew for this expedition IS YOU as we'll be basing our findings on public data and survey responses from nonprofit professionals who oversee corporate revenue at organizations nationwide. You can help us by filling out this survey.
Here's the reward for joining us on this trip. You can join me, Brittany, Maureen and the rest of the gang from Catalist at the Engage for Good Conference in Chicago this May for a swanky cocktail reception for Top 30. Also, you get first access to the results. The deadline to complete the survey is April 27th!
New stuff from me 😊
🍫This week on CauseTalk Radio, Megan and I talk to Shawn Askinosie, Founder & CEO of Askinosie Chocolate and author of the new book, Meaningful Work: A Quest to Do Great Business, Find Your Calling, and Feed Your Soul. This is a great interview, gang. Shawn's story is incredible and he's doing so much GOOD!
📈Remember the Measuring the Impact and Success of a Non-Profit/Corporate Partnership from two week? (No worries if you missed it. Here's the recording.) Many attendees asked for REAL EXAMPLES of nonprofits that were effectively leveraging data to showcase impact. Here are TWO! Special thanks to Catalist users Operation Warm and No Kid Hungry for their interest in sharing examples with you!
Cause marketing notes 📝
The fate of a $1 million donation from Tom's of Maine to The Nature Conservancy is in the hands of the public. Four projects that will help 'Turn the Tide' toward better protecting, preserving and restoring freshwater in the U.S. are being considered - and the public will choose the winner!
😱When charity isn't charity. Some companies are using corporate contributions for selfish purposes.
Is the retailer Kohl's a model to other big box retailers? Instead of closing stores, Kohl's is shrinking them.
🚜Are you working with this company? I'd love to hear about how they are supporting you. With 1,700 stores in 49 states whatever they're doing must be big!
🌊The next wave of cause marketing may include augmented reality. Here are ten retailers that are ready to execute.
The Retail Prophet sounds the death knell for retail clerks. But who will ask, "Would you like to donate a dollar to....?" 😳 But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. Cashier-less stores still have plenty of employees.
🛒With 33 locations in 11 states, this supermarket chain is growing. Add them to your hit list! They are already doing action and purchased triggered donations as well as donate profits days.
Marketing your cause 🤑
🗣Do you have a voice fundraising strategy? Alexa users can now donate to more than 40 charities.
Damn it, nonprofits need more marketing resources and prowess. The United Way - or any other org - isn't going to save you. You're going to have to save yourself.
💩Phil Haid at Public calls bullshit on the notion that businesses shouldn't talk about how their CSR efforts boost their bottom line.
If your cause is targeting young people 18 to 34, using influencers to reach them can help, a lot. [GRAPH]

"I was highly skeptical due to the cost of this webinar, but I didn't know how much I didn't know! Wow, I highly recommend this webinar and Joe Waters was extremely knowledgeable...The best parts were that he offered very tangible advice that nonprofits can use right away, and he offered a lot of great tools and support after the event! Great webinar for nonprofits of any size and cause."
