Newsletter: Best Halloween Costumes for Cause Marketers🗽; To Breakdown Silos Create a Content Council 💥 ; Did Burger King Cross the Line with ‘Scary Places’ Promotion 👻
Well, it's October 28th and we can either talk about Halloween on Saturday or the election on Tuesday. I think you know how I feel about the latter, so let's go with the former...
Every October I get the same question. (Ok, not really, but let's pretend because it's like day 845 of 2020 and I'm ready to lose my shit):
"Joe, I love cause marketing sooooo much. What's the perfect costume for a cause marketer?"
I'm glad you asked. I recommend the following:
1. Pick up a devil/angel costume and you can go as the Selfish Giving logo! Watch as your neighbors exclaim: "Hey, you're Selfish Giving!"
2. A Product RED Apple iPhone costume is perfect for lovers of purchase-triggered donations. But this means for every three pieces of candy you get you have to give one piece to charity (or me).
3. To commemorate a defining moment in the history of cause marketing, dress up as the Statue of Liberty.🗽
4. Salvation Army bellringers have raised hundreds of millions at malls and outside of businesses for over a century.
5. Why not dress up as your favorite charity pinup? Who wouldn't recognize an MDA Shamrock?!
But I think we need one more costume. Hit reply to this email and share ONE MORE COSTUME IDEA that would be perfect for a cause marketer!
The person (or two or three!) with the best suggestion will win a Selfish Giving t-shirt.
✍️ Partnership Notes
1. I've seen some interesting partnerships around voting this fall, but this one is my favorite. The mobile barbering app theCut and Shape Up the Vote are partnering to get out voting information kits to barber shops across the the country.
2. I like to follow what's happening in retail and you should too. That's why I'm listening to a great new pocast called Remarkable Retail. It's hosted by two great retail insiders who know their stuff!
3. From last year, but still so good. Costumed mugshots of real people who have been arrested for irresponsible drinking on Halloween is Budweiser's reminder to 'drink wiser' on the holiday. 👻🍻👻
🤑 Marketing Your Cause
1. To keep sportsmanship alive during the pandemic, Tide stepped in to preserve the NFL Jersey Swap. Watch the clever, funny 30-second spot they created for it.
2. Like me, you want to tear down the silos between marketing and fundraising. Maybe your nonprofit should create a content council.
3. Hmmm...how could your team use Cameo to bring celebrity endorsements to partnership prospects? This is a smahht idea for the right organization.
