I'm proud that my newsletter has inspired others to start a newsletter or to improve the one they have. Since I've fielded a number of questions on newsletters this past week - and it's on my brain - here are a few bits of newsletter advice!

1. Consistency (almost) trumps quality. Sure, your newsletter has to be good. That's table stakes. But people will never stick with your newsletter if it's not delivered consistently (e.g. daily, weekly, bi-monthly). You're trying to create a habit with readers, and if you're not consistent it will never happen. And believe me, consistency can be a grind. But it's also when the magic happens!

2. Send out your newsletter twice. The first time, send it out to everyone. A few days later send it out a second time - but only to those people that didn't open it the first time. Last week, my newsletter had a 36% open rate on day one. Pretty good. But when I sent it out a second time I picked up another 16% in additional opens. More opens means more engagement with your readers.

3. Send your newsletter immediately after someone subscribes. I was reminded of this one by a great newsletter I read called Marketer Crew. Start building that reading habit right away!

"Provide value immediately by sending new subscribers a sample issue...This sample issue will give them value immediately, let them know what to expect, and get them anticipating your next issue. And that means that that they'll be less likely to unsubscribe or mark your email as spam, which can impact your deliverability."

✍️ Partnership Notes

1. This news story is worth two minutes of your time. It talks about cause marketing in Maine, highlights several programs with local brewers and discusses the rollback of commercial co-venture regulations in the state.

2. Via the world's largest bottle of soap, a company is aiming to break a world record for personal care product donations. It will be in NYC tomorrow, Boston on Friday and visiting many other cities through August 4th!

3. The soldier who shot Bin Laden in the face is setting his sights next on cause marketing. Thank you for your service, sir, but this will be a much tougher shot. 🎯

🤑 Marketing Your Cause

1. Panera just created - of all things - a swimwear line for its biggest fans. It begs the question: what is you nonprofit doing to engage your biggest fans.

2. I'm amazed by the number of nonprofits that don't use pop-ups on their web sites. They work! Here's how to set one up that your visitors will ❤️!

3. Nonprofits are overlooking a huge life event: moving. Think about all the interesting ways nonprofits could insert themselves in a positive way when supporters are moving across town or across the country. The key is to watch for the signals and then to act - even if it's with just a bit of empathy!
